Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon) is one such fellow and he
loathes cattlemen legally driving their beasts through territory
he considers his own.
One small party of cattlemen contains two old cowboys in
the form of Spearman (Robert Duvall) and Waite (Kevin Costner),
neither of whom likes being told what to do or being threatened.
Unfortunately, Baxter does both and when things get nasty,
the pair decide to fight back in the best way they know how
- with guns blazing.
Open Range is a sprawling Western directed by Costner and
it does everything right. There are good goodies, semi-good
goodies, a pretty lady, a town bully, a hired killer, a young
kid, cattle, a nice guy, more cattle and some gorgeous landscapes.
There are nicely realised characters, some excellent gunfights,
and a story that rolls along nicely in a mix between High
Noon and Unforgiven.
Costner and Duvall are superb and Annette Benning is not
far behind.
Open Range has been compared very favourably with Unforgiven,
although I think that movie still holds too special a place
in this fellow's mind to be overtaken by this effort. Having
said that, Open Range does come close.
The DVD transfer of Open Range is excellent and the sound
is very good.
If you like Westerns then this is definitely worth the time
and has real potential for the home DVD library.
Conclusion: Movie 85% Extras 60%
