Australian Rules

Review by James Anthony

Australian Rules is definitely a movie of two halves - the first being a fairly light look at a small South Australian fishing town and its love of its resurgent football team - then it moves inexorably into the dark territory of racism, domestic violence, abuse and death.

It centres on two main characters Gary (Blackie) Black, played brilliantly by Nathan Phillips and Dumby Red (Luke Carroll) his best mate and an aborigine from a mission just outside of town.

Blackie is a workmanlike footy player and Dumby is the star and it is on these two that the town has pinned its hopes for the football grand final. The team has not won a flag in 30 years and everyone prays that this will be their year.

The local white folk are forced to put their disdain of the area's aborigines behind them as half the team is made up of black kids.

As said the first half of this powerful movie is light-hearted and sees the story almost dominated by the engaging Kevin Harrington of Seachange fame who plays the coach and local butcher Arks. He's called Arks because he can't say ask.

After the footy, however, tragedy soon strikes and the ugliness emerges. The main ugly is the usually nice guy Simon Westaway, who in Australian Rules, plays the nasty vicious fisherman father of Blackie.

In short, he is an absolute turd and completely irredeemable in anyone's eyes. He contrasts markedly with his long-suffering wife Liz, who is stunningly played by Celia Ireland.

Lisa Flanagan is also excellent as Dumby's sister Clarence.

This is a must-see movie, but it is not what you'd necessarily call fun. As Mrs Anthony said: "It was excellent, but not enjoyable."

Conclusion: Movie 85% Extras: N/A
