Filmed using the "hand held camera" technique made famous by The Blair Witch Project,
which is meant to lend it an air of realism, but, tends to make it look
more of an amateurish production. With 90% of the scenes set in a
bedroom, hallway and stairwell and a cast of four, it's easy not to
forget the shoe-string budget.
But then one can't expect a Ben Hur extravaganza ... or even a Cloverfield sized one.
Paranormal Activity consists of little more than 80% nothing happening on screen, 15% banel dialogue and 5% shock value. Of
course, most of the 80% is meant to build the suspense so that the 5%
of shock really shocks you, and, I suppose, if you were sitting alone
in a dark house in the dead of night, and, highly susceptible (having
spent the evening in an intense seance with a ouija board) then, they
would have had to pry you from the ceiling.
One of the characters in Paranormal Activity,
Micah, grated terribly with his "Leave it to me and I'll solve this
problem even though I can't even begin to understand" attitude.
He wears thin what is already an extremely thin plot to begin with.
Although Paranormal Activity was
a box office success, returning over $150 million from the initial
investment, is far from being a horror or supernatural classic in
the same vein as horror masterpiece, The Exorcist.
This is a DVD hire more, to satisify your curiousity, than one to add to your collection.
Blu Ray Special Features
The DVD comes with two versions of the movie, the
Theatrical, the one released in cinemas, and the Alternative, in which
several changes were made, some scenes cut, others added and with a
different ending.
It's special features, although quite sparse, does provide the third alternative ending and a collage of fan images. Conclusion:
Movie 60% Extras: 50%
