The Parole Officer

One of the most enjoyable movies seen via the DVD in a long time is the excellent British comedy The Parole Officer.

Simon Gardner (Steve Coogan) is not-so-mild mannered parole officer who is so earnest about saving his clients from recidivism that he pisses his fellow workers off to the max.

"I'm annoying" he agrees at an internal tribunal hearing into his performance - in which the fact that he has only had three successes out of 1000 cases is brought up by an unforgiving threesome who banish him to Manchester.

As soon as he arrives he is landed in it up to his neck when a young carjacker is framed for drug dealing by a crooked senior copper. Foolishly stepping in where angels fear to tred, our hero finds himself witness to a murder and being threatened with having all sorts of lewd things done to him in prison if he doesn't forget about the matter.

Deciding to take the corrupt rozzer on, Gardner calls in the only people he's helped go straight - his ex-clients - and works out a plan that will either succeed, or get them thrown into the slammer forever.

Coogan is marvellous as Gardner and he is no stupid, pen-pushing wuss. Neither are his superb backing team of George (Om Puri), Colin (Ben Miller), Jeff (Steven Waddington) and Kirsty (Emma Williams). They get occasional help from a lovely WPC, Emma (Lena Headey), and a secret legendary burglar (we're not telling you, but it's a perfect choice) the A-team does its best to overcome all the odds.

The Parole Officer is a huge amount of fun and will have you laughing at the various antics and situations the gang finds themselves in.

The video transfer is adequate, with a number of glitches and some grain, but the sound gets the thumbs up.

Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 75%
