There are three main lines to follow in the film - a betrayed
designer, a dying designer and a child betrayer - and each
is supported by a myriad of interweaving subplots.
The cast is very good and includes Sonia Braga, Peter Gallagher,
Jeff Goldblum, Harry Hamlin, Mariel Hemingway, Leslie Mann,
Paul Sorvino and Rita Wilson.
For mine the parts with Sorvino as the dying designer are
the pick of the bunch. He is just superb and puts on a performance
that deserved a swag-full of awards.
Rymer shot the movie without a script and just had the actors
improvise. There are moments when some get caught a little
out but overall this is a terrific experiment that works well.
The freshness of the acting is boosted by the mobile camerawork.
I'm not going to ruin your enjoyment of this slow-moving
but absorbing yarn by giving away much, needless to say it
is worth putting the time in.
The transfer is acceptable, although it is pretty soft and
has a number of minor visual glitches. The sound aspect of
Perfume is much better with excellent channel use and
good clear dialogue.
Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 0%
