He's not only mean, but he's only got one hand courtesy of
a duel with the boy wonder Peter Pan who chopped it off and
fed it to a crocodile.
Now the cartoon version by Disney was a winner with some
fun songs and great characterizations. Steve Spielberg's effort
called Hook, with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman was unmentionable,
so how would the latest film effort go?
It has to be said pretty darn well.
It is a hugely enjoyable romp with great computer effects,
excellent teen actors, a superb baddie and some great humour.
Peter Pan is played by Jeremy Sumpter who carries the role
extremely well with a bolshie sort of refusal to get older.
He is overpowered, however, by Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood) who
absolutely commands the screen when she is on with an maturity
and style well beyond her years. She even can hold her own
with the best bad guy around at the moment - the masterfully
evil Jason Isaacs - who doesn't quite get down to his Patriot
nasty level, or Lucius Malfoy - but his Hook is a winner.
And hats definitely have to come off to Richard Briers who
plays a wonderfully funny Mr Smee. He is just a delight.
This is a terrific version of Peter Pan and one that you
can sit down and enjoy with the little ones without any qualms
at all.
