Kohut is a forty-something professor at the Vienna Conservatory
and she drives her students almost as hard as herself.
A brilliant musician she demands nothing less than total
dedication to music and is savage if she doesn't think her
pupils are working hard enough.
One particularly promising young man Walter (Benoit Magimel)
tries his best to have a relationship with the older woman
and while she consents it is on her terms.
She is the dominant one and treats him with cold detachment.
The other important character in her life is her mother (Annie
Giradot) - a horrible old bag - with whom Erika has a weird
love-hate relationship.
Huppert is sensational as Erika and has to be given great
praise for not only her performance, but for taking the role
on in the first place. Her character is hard to like and by
the end of the movie you are shaking your head hoping she
will be all right, but you don't hold out much hope.
The Piano Teacher won a host of awards at Cannes including
the Grand Prize, best actor, actress and directorial awards
and deserved the lot.
It is brave, but will not suit all tastes.
Conclusion: 90% Extras: 85%.
