Pinocchio

What on earth can be said about Pinocchio that hasn't already been written a million times before.

This is a classic Walt Disney movie about a lonely old puppet maker who creates a wooden boy only to have him changed by magic into a living thing.

He doesn't begin as a fully human boy - he has to pass a few tests to do so - and like many youngsters finds the line between good and bad (1940s style) a fine one to balance on.

Mind you, the worst thing our boy gets up to is fibbing and wagging school (and a bit of smoking and drinking on Pleasure Island but hey ...).

Still, right is right and wrong is wrong and so Pinocchio's hopes of becoming real are looking in a lot of trouble.

Fortunately the wise and sensible conscience - Jiminy Cricket - will help him and despite running into some very unsavoury characters, being kidnapped then munched by a whale, Pinocchio and his pal will be alright in the end. It was made in 1940 after all.

And the age of this classic is obvious in the video transfer. Don't get me wrong it is a very good transfer, but the quality of the original footage is a little up and down. Sound-wise it is okay.

I would love to see a remake of Pinocchio - a la Treasure Planet - , but done with a view on today's youngsters and the problems they face.

Conclusion: 85% Extras: 80%.
