Pixar Shorts

Review by Sean Lynch

If there is one thing that Disney do well (besides exploiting youngsters for cash), it's animation. For years they were the kings of the hand drawn epics - with stories & images that have now been etched into our memories and history itself.

However, as the 90s came to a close - it was becoming increasingly apparent that the world was ready to move on. Disney's last real hit was The Lions King - with a string of forgettable follow ups (Mulan, Tarzan, Hercules, Atlantis, Treasure Island) proving that there was little energy left in the format.

Pixar Shorts Film Collection

That was, of course, until Disney acquired a talented group of nerds to reshape the next decade of animation.

Just as my generation will forever remember the adventures of Abu & Aladdin, Simba & Nala and Beauty & that hairy Beast - Pixar have paved the way for not just New-Disney Classics like Toy Story and Finding Nemo, but really allowed a window for Shrek and Bee Movie to exist as well.

This superb DVD collection finally gathers all of the best Pixar shorts (remember those clever little skits that played prior to Toy Story, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc, etc?) which give an astonishing insight into the various levels of development of the art form over the last twenty years.

While the slicker modern day shorts like For The Birds are simply adorable - the real assets to this DVD are the earlier films. While the animation in Luxo Jr and Tin Toy seems amateur compared to the detail of modern day blockbusters like Cars - it should be taken into consideration that many of these were all made before the art form was even created.

More to the point - as you watch each short - you are actually witnessing the CGI art form being created. It is truly nothing short of astonishing.

Each short film has something different to offer, and all of them have their own various levels of appeal - but for mine, you simply can't go past the 2006 short One Man Band. Not only is the story simple and funny - but the detail and overall look of the piece is simply beautiful.

A great addition to the kids Pixar collection - and a must have for students of animation. These guys are innovators of our generation, and they deserve all the credit and kudos that comes their way.

EXTRAS

There's a few likeable extras included here. The kids will enjoy the several Sesame Street short animated skits, while the parents will find the featurette "The Pixar Shorts: A Short History" riveting.

It's truly amazing to see the trials and struggles the small group of Pixar animators when through in order to see their dreams and ambitions fulfilled, and it certainly gives you greater respect for the work that goes into the CGI films we are all beginning to take for granted.

Superb!

Conclusion: Movie 75% Extras: 70%
