Planet 51

Review by
Sean Lynch

In the crowded world of CGI epics, Planet 51 was always bound to get lost somewhere between Hoodwinked, Space Chimps and Chicken Little.

Sure, it has a few decent names on board, but by and large it's looking just a little bit video game for the audiences (and this particular critic's) liking.

Planet 51 follows sixteen year old Lem who lives on (not surprisingly) Planet 51, a white picket fenced world reminiscent of 1950's America. His life is happy, safe and predictable... until the unpredictable happens!

Out of the blue, and millions of miles from home, astronaut Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker's spaceship comes crashing down right in the middle of a family barbecue! Unaware of his surroundings, Chuck is reveling in his "Big Moment", he plants his flag triumphantly before realising he's not alone.

Turning, he sees Planet 51's green-skinned inhabitants staring back at him bemused!

In a panic he flees, bumping into many of the panicked natives who find this "alien" creature equally as frightening. He takes refuge in the planetarium where Lem works and though their initial meeting is fraught with the kind of calamity that ensues when alien meets alien, they strike up a friendship.

Lem agrees to help Chuck get back to his ship before it returns to earth without him but they'll have to outrun and outwit the paranoid Planet 51 Army who are determined to capture chuck.

It takes Lem, his friends, an excitable but trusty pathfinder vehicle, Rover and a pair of not-so-bright Planet 51 soldiers to help them reach Chuck's ship in time. Yep - this is a good old fashioned round'em up.

While not as sharp and sassy and the multitude of competitors, Plantet 51 is cute enough and solid enough for school holiday crowds. Let's face it - anything to keep the little kids out of your hair, am I right?

Hell, there are even a few gags thrown in for the good of the adults (a veiled stab at Back To The Future anyone?) but hardly the classic the producers and creators may have been hoping for.

DVD Special Features

If there is one thing kids do well - it's put together some pretty damn impressive Special Features!

Included here are Extended Scenes, featurettes including "The World of Planet 51" which explores the Sights and Sounds of the movie, a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette, plus a Music Video Montage and some fairly cool Animation Progression Reels.

Well worth checking out.

Conclusion: Movie 60% Extras: 68%
