The Pledge

Performances from Jack Nicholson are nothing if not interesting. Whether it be a psycho hubby, a stubborn asylum inmate or, my favourite, a randy Devil.

In The Pledge, Nicholson plays an-about-to-be retired city cop who embarks on one last case to find the killer of a little girl.

He promises the parents of the dead girl he will hunt down the murderer and when the case is officially closed he doesn't believe the result and pursues it on his own.

The Pledge follows Jerry Black's lengthy pursuit of the serial childkiller through some glorious landscapes in which the beauty of the backgrounds make the crimes that much more horrendous.

Twice divorced, Black's passion is for fishing and so he buys an old gas station near excellent angling spots and settles into his new life.

He befriends a young solo mum and her daughter and they join him in his too-large-for-just-me house.

But while he is happier than he has been in a long time, Black is still haunted by the fact that the killer is out there stalking children and when he is suddenly given a major new clue returns to the case with a vengeance.

We don't want to give away the plot, but while The Pledge is deliberately paced at slow - it inexorably builds an inner tension within you that certainly had this chap getting more and more nervous towards the end of the movie.

Sean Penn's direction is terrific and you find yourself continually praying that things are not going to turn out the way you think they are going to.

Nicholson is excellent as the troubled Black, Robin Wright Penn is superb as the solo mum and the pair are backed by a very fine ensemble cast that includes the likes of Benicio del Toro, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren, Aaron Eckhart and Sam Shephard.

Not everyone will like this movie, but it's fair to say that if you watch it you'll have an enthralling night's viewing ahead.

Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 30%
