Red Dragon

Review by James Anthony

The first time this DVD went on to the player it was with the old thought - how can it compare with Silence of the Lambs?

Fortunately, Red Dragon doesn't try to compete with its massively successful first incarnation as it has only one common character - the evil Dr Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).

The others parts are all new or, rather, older - as Red Dragon is a prequel to Silence.

Red Dragon also has a wickedly excellent cast that boast the likes of Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson and Harvey Keitel.

Norton is Will Graham, the hero of the movie, and he is the chap who caught Lecter - albeit copping a seriously nasty knife in the guts for his efforts.

He has retired from profiling but is dragged back into the FBI fold by Jack Crawford (Harvey Keitel) who needs his help to solve the Tooth Fairy murders.

A lunatic is wiping out whole families and it needs Graham's ability to stop it from happening again.

Fiennes is Francis Dolahyde, the tortured killer who is even more nasty than the baddie of Silence, and he is utterly believable. Almost as good is Emily Watson as a blind woman who falls, unsuspectingly, for the Tooth Fairy.

Having watched Red Dragon twice, it is fair to say that it was more enjoyable on second viewing and should be appreciated by thos who liked Silence.

Both the video and sound transfers are first-rate.

Red Dragon is not quite up to the Silence of the Lambs, but it is still a clever and entertaining manhunt.

Conclusion: 90% Extras: 85%.
