Resident Evil

The cross-over between the world of movies and that of computer games has been a bit of a troubled one in the past.

Films like Tomb Raider have a kick-arse feel to them that appeals to gamers, but despite its style it failed to press the buttons of cinematic buffs.

The latest game-to-movie effort is Resident Evil starring Milla Jovovich and a cast of recognisable support actors.

It is the adventure of a woman (Jovovich) who awakens from a dream and finds herself wondering who she is and, more importantly, where she is?

Basically she and a group of commandos have found themselves in a contaminated laboratory complex where all sorts of nasty goings-on have been going on.

An ultra deadly virus has been released and the underground building has been sealed off by an all-knowing computer called Red Queen.

It is up to our gal and her buddies to take down the computer, get out of the building and one other thing. They have to keep away from the former scientists because they have all turned into flesh-rending zombies!

Hey, it was fun as a game!

Resident Evil is a fun bit of relaxation in an action-horror-thriller sort of way and it has some wonderful special effects in it. The scene where the laser booby traps are set off is not only exciting, but dead-set erky perky. I want some in my kitchen to slice meat.

Jovovich is very believable as the all-action gal and her back-ups include Michelle Rodriguez, James Purefoy, Eric Mabius, Martin Crewes and Colin Salmon.

The transfer is excellent, so is the energetic sound and music, and there is a nice package of extras to go with it all.

Film buffs won't expect much - and may quite enjoy it. Mind you, gamers will get right into Resident Evil and may find themselves wishing to help the group ... even this fellow kept reaching out for a controller to join in the fun and get them through the really sticky moments.

Conclusion: 80% Extras: 60%.
