Roadkill

Review by James Anthony

It isn't easy for a Wombat to write about Roadkill - too many lost relatives - but the movie of the same name (Joyride in the US) is a rip-snorter that thoroughly deserves the description "thriller".

Roadkill has humour, action and, above all, suspense. It is this skilful use of tension that raises the movie far above most others in the category.

It begins tamely enough with a young jock Lewis (Paul Walker) heading home for the holidays and deciding to pick up a friend-that-he-wants-to-be- much-closer-to in the shape of Venna (Leelee Sobieski).

On the way he discovers his slightly off-the-rails brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) is just getting out of the slammer - where he had been thrown after a drunk and disorderly occasion in Mormon-town Salt Lake City - and stops to collect him.

It takes a little while for the pair to bond again, but they begin to warm to each other and soon Fuller's practical jokes have them as schoolkids again.

One prank involves Lewis calling up a truckie on his CB radio and making very suggestive talk in a low voice.

Stopping in a small motel they have a brush with a very tired and grumpy traveller who is both rude and aggressive towards Fuller, who decides to pay the guy back by giving his room number to the eager-sounding truckie.

What follows is not nice and just as the guys think all is over they discover that the truckie was not happy about the practical joke and is out to pay them back.

And he does big time - both before and after they collect Venna.

Roadkill is stylish and extremely effective with a good cast, terrific ever-building thrills and an intelligent script.

While Walker and Sobieski are good, the star of Roadkill is Zahn who shamelessly steals just about every scene from his co-stars.

If you liked Duel, then you will love Roadkill.

Conclusion: 85% Extras: 75%.
