Not that they always like him, and not that his pick-up style
always works, but Roger is not particularly perturbed by this
and, if nothing else, allows him to ease off a bit of steam
brought on by his high-pressure advertising job.
His batchelor lifestyle is rudely interrupted one day when
his young nephew Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) arrives on his doorstep
unannounced.
Mildly put out, old Unc decides to show the gawky youth around
the city and lead him on the slippery slope to manhood.
What follows is a really interesting and funny look at opposing
points of view with the eager but sensitive lad doing winningly
with the ladies and the jaded expert looking increasingly
tired.
Roger is both refreshingly honest and obnoxiously know-it-all,
but Scott carries the role off so well you really like the
guy despite his advertising taint.
Eisenberg does wonderfully as the youngster caught out of
his depth and his character's eye-opening adventure gets played
with warmth and just the right mixture of niceness and teenage
lust.
Roger Dodger is dialogue and attitude driven and features
a nice little support cast including Isabella Rossellini,
Jennifer Beals and Elizabeth Berkley.
The transfer is crisp and the sound clear.
An absolute cracker.
Conclusion: 85% Extras: 70%.
