The outlaws have stolen a shipment of nitroglycerine and
take over a small Indian village where they create mayhem
and murder the resident preacher.
The dead man's daughter Eula (Katherine Hepburn) is a bible-thumping
feminist who insists, much to Cogburn's annoyance in joining
in the hunt.
Rooster Cogburn has an ordinary script. It has beautiful
pictures and an appropriate soundtrack.
The supporting cast do all that is asked of them. But… the
two leads are extraordinary!
Somehow, despite their disparities: the hard drinking, shooting,
ruthless lawman and the evangelistic, educated, stubborn missionary
get along and combined make a formidable force.
They overcome their adversaries with guile, Gatling gun,
and gumption.
Riding above what would have been an average western is the
magic that can only exist between two stars. John Wayne and
Katherine Hepburn display a mutual affection that can only
come from two people who, despite differences in social backgrounds,
politics and accents, have a high regard and care for each
other.
As an action western, it's enjoyable.
As a love story it's remarkable!
Conclusion: 80% Extras: 30%.
