Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Old Santa will be busier than a one-armed paperhanger at the moment as he prepares for Christmas and parents could go a long way past thinking about this movie for their nippers' pressie sack.

It is a full-length animated movie following Rudolph (Kathleen Barr) - he of the red nose fame - and his adventures saving toys from a mysterious Toy Taker.

Our little deer is also a tad self-conscious about his hooter and is thinking of a bit of plastic surgery to de-red it.

Anyway, the Toy Taker (Rick Moranis) has not only ripped toys off Santa (Gary Chalk), but all the world's kiddywinks and taken the pressies to a faraway place to be with him.

Rudolph, with the assistance of Clarice (Elizabeth Carol Savenkolf) and some friends - including Bumbles the abominable snowman (Chalk again) - sets off to track the beastly chap down and save Christmas.

The story itself is a really nice one and will appeal to those between 3 and about 10. Some parts are sad near the end, but the overall story is an uplifting one that shows that not all bad people are all bad.

Jamie Lee Curtis has a fantastic part as Queen Camilla - a disco hippo of all things and Richard Dreyfuss is Scoop the Snowman, who narrates the yarn.

I have to say the animations are pretty good - very computer graphicky - and the transfer is cleaner than fresh snow. The sound is excellent and there are some really good songs for the kids to sing along with.

Rudolph has grown on me after the kids watched it a couple of times and judging by their reactions to it - repeat viewing value - I'll give it a thumbs up.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras 40%
