This time around it follows a courtcase where a widow is
suing a gun manufacturer for her husband's death in a massacre.
The defence brings in a jury expert called Rankin Fitch (Gene
Hackman) who is the best jury-picking person money can buy.
Needless to say the things he gets up to dig the dirt on potential
jurors is scary and is hopefully not what they really get
up to. We are talking about straight out buying of votes,
stalking, going through personal records on abortions and
another's HIV status.
Up against Fitch and his crew is the idealistic lawyer Wendell
Rohr (Dustin Hoffman), who knows he is up against the Fitch
machine but remains steadfast in his belief that the jury
won't be bought.
That is until he starts getting messages from someone on
the jury who is willing to win the case for ewither the prosecution,
or the defence, depending upon who pays the most.
The naughty boy is Nicholas Easter (John Cusack) and he is
being helped by his girlfriend Marlee (Rachel Weisz).
Somehow he has got himself on to the jury and the pair have
all the answers to attempts to work out who is trying to hijack
the jury.
Runaway Jury is great entertainment with twists and turns
to keep you guessing most of the way through the movie.
Cusack is terrific and so is Hoffman. Much as it may be distasteful
to say this, Runaway Jury belongs to Hackman's amoral and
ruthless Fitch. He is just fantastic and could well go down
as one of the most liked/disliked characters in movies.
Give yourself a treat and settle in for a great yarn.
