As children lose their Christmas
spirit, the icicle starts to melt. When it's gone... so is Christmas
(cue the dramatic music).
Meanwhile,
Santa Paws' son, Puppy Paws, grows tired of the North Pole and the
responsibilities that come with being his father's son, and decides he
wants to be a normal puppy. He finds Budderball (one of the Air Buddies) at the top of the naughty list and decides that he is the right pup to teach him how.
So he hitches a ride to America, where he meets the Air Buddies... and soon the fate of Christmas and the icicle rests in their paws (sorry I couldn't resist).
And, of course, no dog movie would be complete without an evil dog catcher thrown into the mix... played by none other than Back to the Future's "Doc", Christopher Lloyd. The movie also marks George Wendt's fourth time as Santa Claus. Norm!
It's no surprise that kids love the Air Buddies...
they are adorable little golden retrievers that get up to mischief and
each have a unique, stereotypical personality. There's Budderball, who
has an insatiable hunger; B-Dawg, who is obsessed with hip-hop, and
won't stop calling everyone 'dawg' (it gets old, quickly); Mudbud, who,
obviously, likes getting dirty; Buddah, who speaks philosophically and
often quotes the teachings of (you guessed it) Buddah; and lastly, Rose
Bud; the little sister.
The dialogue is incredibly trite, and
the script seems like it was written in about ten minutes and shot in a
day. That said, the kids will certainly get enjoyment out of it, even
if the parents don't. In fact, I can imagine there are many parents out
there who dread the release of the next Air Buddies installment.
In fact, there's another one already on the way: Fairy Buddies... what's next? Robot Buddies? Ninja Buddies? Easter Buddies? While researching the buddies I even stumbled across plans to make a Santa Paws movie. I'm certain they won't rest until they've out numbered Bond. DVD EXTRAS
A sing-a-long is included for the kiddies (which they are bound to
love), as well as a music video and a segment called "Dylan and Cole
Sprouse: Blu-Ray is Suite!".
Dylan and Cole are from the Disney Channel's The Suite Life on Deck,
and in this special feature they shamelessly plug Blu-Ray technology...
Hey, you can't blame the marketing department; it's sneaky but it's
still a good idea.
The segment is actually quite funny and sometimes far more entertaining than the film itself.
Conclusion:
Movie 55% Extras: 70%
