Picking up where the first film left off, Save the Last Dance 2
sees Sara (Izabella Miko) enter the prestigious Julliard dance school,
where she immediately comes to blows with her instructor (Jacqueline
Bissett) and her vintage lesson plans. With the help of a few new
friends, Sara ultimately puts on a show demonstrating just how exciting
ballet can be if you ‘mix it up’ a bit.
Ok, so the template mightn’t be as fresh as the original, the lass (Miko, of Coyote Ugly
fame) stepping in for Julia Stiles mightn’t have the acting ability of
her predecessor, and the script mightn’t be as gripping, but the dance
sequences will undoubtedly shake the socks right off of ya! They’re
terrific, possibly even more so than those in the first film. This
time, we aren’t simply seeing a profusion of hip-hop infused dance
moves, but also a sensational display of classical dance – and later, a
profusion of both styles – that will grip any ballerina (like myself)
to the screen. There’s some really impressive moves in this, and
thought that won’t be enough to attract a mass audience, combined with
the enjoyable storyline, it might be.
This is one of the better direct-to-DVD releases in quite some time. Leave your tutu at the stage door, and enjoy!
