Say Anything

Review by James Anthony

This is the second John Cusack movie I've had the pleasure to squizz at over the past fortnight and it is fair to say he's welcome on my DVD player anytime.

It's an older one - Say Anything, filmed in 1989 - and shows the guy has always been able to act and pick interesting roles.

This time around Cusack plays Lloyd Dobler, a nice young chap from the poor part of town, who happens to have a hankering for the leading brain of his school Dianne Court (Ione Skye).

He has friends galore she has none, except her dad, due largely to a tunnel focus on studying. However all the hard work has paid off and Dianne has just won an overseas scholarship.

Before she goes she wants to live a little and when a nervous Lloyd asks her out she willingly says yes.

From there - for a while - it's romance until her dad (played exceptionally well by John Mahoney) reckons she's getting a bit too fond of the directionless lad.

Say Anything is one of those movies you'll sit down to and enjoy as it has a nice easy-flowing feel-good vibe to it. Okay, some of the girls permed mullet hairstyles are horrendous - but we've all gone out with girls with bad hairdos.

It is an intelligent, non-judgemental movie that portrays teens as actually being quite human. It has a good soundtrack, but when Peter Gabriel's sensational In Your Eyes comes on you'll be absolutely stopped in your tracks.

As mentioned, Cusack is wonderful and Skye is spot on as both the lovely and intelligent Dianne.

The video transfer is acceptable, but you wouldn't want to play the movie on your brand new 120-centimetre rear-projection TV. You'd get a nasty shock. The picture is flat and the colour so-so. The sound, however, is very good.

Say Anything is a nice feel-good movie about teens. It's not brilliant - although still one of the best of its genre - but it deals sensibly and well with important issues and relationships.

Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 30%
