Scarface is one of this chap's least favourite Al Pacino
movies and yet it is one of his bravest and most memorable
performances.
He plays Tony Montana, one of thousands of criminals who
escaped to America when Fidel Castro threw open his prison
doors and expelled some of the nastiest felons around. Nice
one Fidel!
Of course they swarmed to Miami and there we follow Montana's
story from assassin, to minor drug dealer, to mob henchman
to the No.1 spot as drug lord.
It is a sordid and exceptionally violent tale and there is
very little to like about the main character except for, maybe,
his driven obsession to suceed - albeit not in a line of work
I'd like to be in.
In his climb from rags to riches, Montana meets with a host
of thoroughly unpleasant people who mostly die in very unpleasant
ways.
Still, there can be no doubt that Scarface was - and is -
a brilliant warts-and-all look into the lives of rich and
trashy drug-dealing scumbags.
Pacino is outstanding, and the support cast delivers almost
perfect performances.
Conclusion: Movie 85% Extras 80%
