Scarfies

Review by James Anthony

It is a struggling university student's dream. Finding a basement full of mature dope plants that are just sitting there ready to be used or sold.

Succumbing to the temptation of easy money five Kiwi students at Otago University (known as Scarfies) keep a bit for themselves and then sell off most of the illegal crop at a nice profit. Well, profitable enough if you weren't expecting to get more that is.

The problem, however, is when the owner of the crop finds that it has been sold at bargain basement (excuse the pun) prices and he's feeling pretty peeved.

From then on the fun times for Emma (Willa O'Neill), Alex (Taika Cohen), Scotty (Neill Rea), Nicole (Ashleigh Seagar) and Graham (Charlie Bleakley) evaporate as first they are late for a crucial rugby match and then meet the man of their nightmares in the shape of a vengeful intruder (Jon Brazier).

What follows is a mixture of thrills, horror and blackish comedy as the students try to get themselves out of the mess they have got themselves into.

The premise - and indeed storyline - for Scarfies is a good one. The finished product, however, doesn't live up to a good start and leaves you feeling a bit annoyed.

Without trying to get into the mind of the director you think that maybe he ran with the idea as long as he could, but then opted for a Blair Witch-style approach complete with scarves and beanies.

The acting, which pretty solid overall, gets a bit silly at times - except for Brazier who is superb - and through that Scarfies loses momentum and its way over the interesting issue of killing people or not.

Some people really liked this movie, others hated it. It annoyed me with its descent into silliness.

Conclusion: Movie 70%, Extras 70%
