Cross (Burt Lancaster) is a spy who wants to retire. CIA chief Mcleod (John Colicos) believes he is a double agent and hires a hit man to take him out.

The man selected is former French paratroop officer Jean Laurier (Alain Delon), code name Scorpio, who is framed with heroin possession to ensure his compliance.

Cross, disguised as a priest, escapes from Washington to Vienna.

There he calls in some old debts from the Head of Russian Intelligence Sergie Zharkov (Paul Schofield) and a concentration camp survivor Max (Shmul Rodensky) to help get his wife to safety out of America.

The CIA is unrelenting in its efforts to kill him and Cross resists Russian efforts to make him become a defector. In the meantime Scorpio seeks his prey despite a growing feeling that Cross is a good guy and his employers are evil.

Scorpio is a 'cold war' movie. It isn't a classic like The Spy Who Came In From The Cold but it presents well the case for enduring friendship regardless of the expediency of current politics.

When Cross goes to a nightime rendevous in an ill lit Viennese street he is met by a man whistling the 'Internationale'. "It's been a long time since Spain," he says. "The best died there," is the stark reply.

Cross and Zharkov represent two protagonists both of whom believe in their causes; Capitalism and Communism, yet can still recognise that their human values outweigh both dogmas. This is a film that is worth a second viewing, the first for action and the second for the message.

Conclusion: 85% Extras: 40%.
