The actors and actresses all seem to be having a ball -
even those who end up getting sliced and diced - and you can
just see the humour in David Arquette's eyes as he plays the
dawky town deputy Dewey Riley. The scenes where he is with
his wife-to-be Courteney Cox are played to perfection.
Anyway, Scream is Wes Craven's homage to slasher movies
and throughout the film there are numerous references to the
rules of horror flicks and how to avoid getting butchered.
The scene is set when the insane killer decides to make Drew
Barrymore his No.1 target and the suspense is built up beautifully
before ending in a bloody mess.
Then, he decides to go for Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell)
whose mother was raped and murdered only the year before.
However, Sidney is no pushover and knows how to handle (she
thinks) strange callers over the phone.
There is added tension when a TV reporter Gale Weathers (Cox)
arrives to follow the latest slaying and she has seriously
peeved off our heroine with a tell-all book about what a floozie
her dead Mum was.
Without going into all the details there are about a bazillion
murders and scary bits galore as the youngsters try to save
themselves from whoever is trying to fillet them.
Who is the killer? Will he improve his phone manners?
All this and more is answered in the stylish and fun Scream.
The video transfer is terrific - sharp and clear - and the
colour nicely saturated (particularly the blood in the carpet,
hahahaha). Sound-wise, Scream will have you jumping
at not only the high-pitched squawks of victims, but the sucking
noises as knives strike home.
Huge fun on a very well done DVD.
Conclusion: 85% Extras: 75%.
