We
get it - it's clever! Old Hanna Barberra characters and footage
revoiced with odd storylines. It was very funny when it was done with Space Ghost, even better with Birdman... but Sealab 2021 is more of the same, and the joke is wearing very, very thin.
One
of the originals to hit the now famous Cartoon Network [adult swim] in
2000, the show's history stems from it's creators who stole reels of
the 70's Hanna Barberra series Sealab 2020 (after
they were fired from Cartoon Network) and revoiced it. Going back to
their former employer several years later, they pitched the series -
and the rest is history.
For those interested in the thinly
veiled plotline (but let's face it, it's just another excuse for non
sensical spurts of randomness) the show is set in the year 2021. In
this mind-bogglingly distant future, Sealab rises imperiously from the
ocean's floor, her crew charged with exploring the possibility of
underwater colonization. That is, when they're not fighting giant
squids over a toy oven, or running pirate radio stations, or trying to
put their brains into robot bodies, or going back in time... you get
the drift!
Well worth checking out if you haven't seen any of
the other shows, but if you are familiar with the [adult swim] back
catalogue then Sealab 2021 is all a bit to familiar (and not in the good way). EXTRAS
Some
great extras included here. As usual, Madman have put 110% in the
packaging design (no plastic cover and one sided slip for these guys!!).
A
cool inclusion here is the original pilot which the shows creators
threw together all those years ago. It's rather interesting to see the
subltle differences between the final product - but very pleasing to
see how the creators feel about their own work.
Also included
are a batch of deleted scenes, the best of which is an uncensored
version of a scene which was originally beeped out when it went to air.
Ultimatly proving that sometime, what you don't hear is often funnier
than what you do hear. Conclusion:
Movie 70% Extras: 75%
