The grumpy old pair are Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael
Caine) who are both single and seem to have spent almost all
of their lives living overseas.
They don't exactly leap for joy at the idea of having a young
lad around and Walter finds himself struggling to fit into
their lifestyle on a Texas farm and its run-down old homestead.
Both Hub and Garth are set in their ways and, it has to be
said, their ways are very, very different.
They are not fond of strangers and have a huge amount of
fun giving traveling salesmen a hard time.
Eventually, however, the two bachelors take a shine to their
young relative and as Secondhand Lions progresses a real bond
develops between the trio and Garth begins to tell Walter
about their lives overseas.
Their adventures are over-the-top to say the least and, when
viewed through Walter's ever-wide eyes, turn into the stuff
of fantastical fiction. Or is it
The actors are all superb and Osment more than holds his
own against the experienced old hands Duvall and Caine. Duvall
is in his element and while a Texan-accented Caine is a bit
of a mind-jump for film fans it does work.
The photography is beautiful and the film's video transfer
a winner.
Secondhand Lions is just one of those movies you have to
watch as no decent reviewer will give too much away about
what happens. Needless to say it is engaging, at times exceptionally
funny and will leave you with a warm glow.
Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras 85%
