Seven: Deluxe Special Edition

In the old creepy, psycho thriller genre there are two outstanding movies that come immediately to mind - Silence of the Lambs and Seven.

Seven was the little brother in the crictical acclaim stakes, but it is nonetheless a powerful and gripping yarn that will have you chewing your nails as you follow the trail of a psycho killer.

Leading the way is a tired and jaded Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and a brash, gung-ho Detective Mills (Brad Pitt).

The new partners don't get off to a good start - each rubbing the other the wrong way - and they go down separate paths of investigation. The intellectual Freeman spots links between the murders, while Pitt is scientifically piecing together the case.

Freeman discovers that the murderer is leading them through a series of deaths, and clues, based upon the Seven Deadly Sins of Gluttony, Sloth, Greed, Pride, Envy, Lust, Wrath.

From the start, we have to say Seven is worthy of the R18+ classification it has, as it is more than a little gruesome in parts - and others are downright shocking. We won't mention the dessicated victim of sloth.

But, eye-averting as it can sometimes be, Seven is an engrossing tale that will have enough chills and thrills for action fans, and huge helpings of brain-stretching story for thinkers.

Freeman is just terrific as the mind-weary Somerset, Pitt is great as the young gun copper, while Gwyneth Paltrow pops in to add a bit of softness to an otherwise hard-edged film. We won't say who the special guest killer is, although you should be able to pick his voice early on.

The transfer for this deluxe edition is almost perfect with crispness, clarity, excellent colour registration and level of detail. Problems are almost non-existent and you can tell that a great deal of care has been taken during the remastered presentation.

The sound is excellent with speech, even mutters, coming in nice and clearly.

All up, this is a very good DVD and will fit nicely into any movie-lover's collection.

Conclusion: Movie 85%, Extras 70%
