Dead set, Shakespeare in Love is a superb piece of movie making and one that brings the Elizabethan Era springing into life.

Great costumes, dirt, muck, grime, buckets of internal matter being thrown into open sewers - aaaah, yes, it was a grand age for the English language. Hygeine is something else again.

Anyway, this winner of seven Oscars has arrived on Superbit DVD and it looks sumptuous. Mind you, the original DVD was pretty special visually, but this does crank it up in both look and sound.

The DTS soundtrack is very good, but is not that superior to the original 5.1, although it does give more solidity to the dialogue.

Picture-wise, this version still has a few problems with aliasing - where the image shimmers over finely detailed areas.

In fact the thatched roof of the Globe in the opening shots is quite bad and sets your brain to picking out just about every other instance it sees.

They mainly come in the straw-covered streets and the gorgeous costumes being worn.

As said, once I got the first screenful it became a little annoying that these got past quality control in a Superbit disc.

Conclusion: Movie: 90%
