Still, the guy is nothing if not resilient and continues
on with his quest despite the odds - that is until he is hypnotised
to see the inner beauty within people rather than their physical
attractiveness.
From then on Hal's life does a huge u-turn and he finds himself
irresistibly attracted to some of the most gorgeous women
around. Of course, it is all in his mind, as his best mate
Mauricio (Jason Alexander) keeps trying to warn him.
But Hal is having the time of his life and when he meets
Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow), a wonderful hospital volunteer
and Peace Corps worker and he becomes absolutely smitten.
Forget the fact Mauricio keeps trying to tell him she is actually
200-kilos plus...
Anyway, you get the drift of the plot and it is a really
well done comedy. It takes a while to pick up on the beautiful/ugly-inside
people and when you eventually see how they really look it
is with a good dose of "aha, I thought so."
Black is excellent as the not-hypnotised/hypnotised/not-hypnotised
Hal, as is Paltrow - both in the fat suit and out of it -
and Alexander is his usual screen self: a hideous, obnoxious
man.
I have to say Shallow Hal was not quite what I expected and
certainly enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. It is
a gentle comedy that has some hilarious moments - like when
Rosemary does a bomb in the pool and the splash is so huge
it flings a kid into a tree!
The transfer is very good, considering it is restricted to
a single-layer of the DVD, and the sound is fine. There is
a special edition DVD available with some pretty good-looking
extras (listed).
Conclusion: Movie 80%, Extras 0%
