Review by James Anthony

As a person who has little respect for TV news, and even less for reality TV, the idea of shooting a camera has a huge amount of appeal.

And so, when veteran cop Mitch Preston (Robert de Niro) deals with an intruding lens in that fashion it was to much applause in the Anthony house.

Unfortunately, for Preston, his act earns him a punishment that few people would appreciate - he has to appear in a TV cop show - and he gets lumbered with the would-be actor and fellow cop Trey Sellars (Eddie Murphy).

Not only is the pair like chalk and cheese - Preston actually knows what he is doing as a cop - but Sellars was the guy who ruined the major drug bust that Preston was about to make.

Trying to keep the tension going between the two is TV producer Chase Renzi (Rene Russo) who discovers their mutual dislike is a winning formula that sends the show rocketing skywards in the ratings.

But while Sellars tries to boost his acting profile, Preston is still keen to deal with the drug boss and so has to continue his investigation while live on TV.

There is a real on-screen chemistry between De Niro and Murphy, although it has to be said that the latter's character is probably his least likeable role to date.

The action scenes are excellent - particularly the dump-truck chase - and watch out for a brilliant performance by William Shatner (TJ Hooker) who tries to coach the pair in how to play a TV cop.

The video transfer is clean and sharp with no obvious problems, while the sound is excellent.

There have been very mixed reports about Showtime and although I do not think it is the best work done by the leading actors, I found it an easy and amusing watch.

Conclusion: Movie 75%, Extras 40%
