This time around Frankie’s guests are two icons of the 1960s
- groovy group The 5th Dimension and the wonderful actress
(Julia) and singer Diahann Carroll.
Frankie pulls Carroll’s leg about the spelling of her name
but there is a serious part when he talks about black and
white Americans joining together.
Considering this would have been filmed very close to the
massive race riots that split the US it is edgy stuff.
The pair sing a medley of spritual songs including Lonesome
Road and Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen. It is good stuff.
Next up it’s The Fifth Dimension a black group that comes
on with pastel blue, lace suits. They sing a couple of numbers
and then are joined by Frankie - dressed in a pastel blue,
lace suit - to help them sing their fantastic hit Sweet Blindness.
If you don’t recognise the title you will the music! Music
and songs aside, this special shows not only that the Chairman
of the Board certainly had his fingers on America’s political
and social pulse, but also was one hell of a comedian ready
to take the piss out of himself.
Conclusion: Movie 80%
