The movie was just as remembered. Hunky John Philip Law is
Sinbad, Tom Baker is the evil magician Koura, Martin Shaw
of The Professionals fame is Rachid, and Caroline (can
a swoon be avoided) Munro is the slave girl Mariana.
Plot-wise, this is no headache-causing stuff.
Sinbad
gains a magic amulet when a strange creature is shot down
by one of his crew and he is attacked by the evil wizard Koura.
He gets sanctuary with a golden-masked Grand Vizier, who is
fighting Koura to protect his people.
The pair discover that the amulet is part of a map to the
location of the legendary fountain of youth. If Koura can
regain his youthful energy then he is certain of victory.
So, it is up to our gallant band - and Caroline - to save
the day and rescue the world from impending doom.
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad is perfect family viewing
on a rainy afternoon and the children will enjoy the now-dated
special effects.
The video transfer is surprisingly good with great colour
and contrast. It is a tad grainy, but this is 1970s vintage,
and the many speckles and artifacts are noticeable.
However, it is good easy-watching fun.
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, The 7th Voyage Of
Sinbad and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger are
all on the Ultimate Sinbad Collector's Pack from Columbia
TriStar.
Conclusion: 80% Extras: 75%.
