So it's great to see yet another show in the vein of Square One TV or The Curiosity Show
has now hit the screens which goes about helping everyone have some fun
a learn little bit more, but without us ever knowing we are essentially
in a science class.
Sleek Geeks
is a six-part factual series featuring Triple J cult hero Dr Karl
Kruszelnicki and maths whizz (and glass eyed) Adam Spencer. Developed
off the back of their successful stage show of the same name, the
series is an everyday look at science in Dr Karl and Adam's own
eclectic style.
Based loosely around themes such as 'Time', 'Mind Games' and 'Senses' Sleek Geeks provides answers to some of the most odd questions facing humanity (some question of which, I don't think anyone even asked).
There
are some very clever experiements here, from Adam walking across hot
coals, the studio audience chowing down on some of the hottest chilli's
in the world, to trying to break glass using only an opera singers
voice, as well as a vox pop which tries to unravel the mystery of an
X-Ray of sexual intercourse.
This is some genuinely enjoyable
TV, something which has been lacking from Aussie TV for sometime. The
show originally aired in prime time and struggled to find an audience -
which seems to be a mistake on the programming departments behalf -
because had this screened at 4pm on a weekday, this would make for
superb after school viewing.
Dr Karl is the real star of
the show playing up to the 'wacky scientist' tag without ever going
over the top. He is the ultimate dork - but in that regard - he is
quite likeable and endearing, with his shirts giving Bill Cosby's
colourful sweaters a run for their money. The same can't be said for
Spencer who continues to be the most annoying one eyed man in the TV
industry - yet the ABC seems to love him.
Spencer aside, Sleek Geeks is well worth checking out if you have a brain size larger than Bridgette from Big Brother and should without doubt be part of the curiculum for school kids.
Because
the best way to teach is kids is by ensuring they don't know they are
learning anything at all - and we have Mathman eating compound
fractions to thank for that bit of advice!
EXTRAS
Sadly,
no extras at all here. It would have been great to see some delted
experiments, or even some kind of trivia game - but the powers that be
seem to have opted against it.
Still worth checking out as it's a truly enjoyable series.
Conclusion:
Movie 80% Extras: N/A
