The locals claim it is a headless ghost riding through the
woods that is doing the damage but a city copper, Ichabod
Crane, is sent by the authorities to get to the bottom of
the problem.
A wizard technically, Crane (Johnny Depp) is also a bit of
a know-all and tends to rub people up the wrong way. He is
also scared of spiders and goes a bit gooey at the sight of
blood.
Crane ridicules the locals and their belief of a Headless
Horseman - said to be a mad Hessian cavalryman searching for
his own head - but finds himself face to ... neck stump ...
with the very real apparition.
Along the way, our young hero has to untangle inter-family
rivalries within the town and try to work out just how the
murderous rider picks his victims.
Sleepy Hollow is a gothic whodunnit where almost all
the characters are suspects at any given stage.
The support cast - Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Jeffrey
Jones and Christopher Walken - are uniformly excellent, with
a marvellously simpering Michael Gambon guilty of scene-stealing
just about every time he appears on camera.
Technically, this is an excellent DVD. The cinematography,
sharpness of its transfer on to disc, and the positional sound
are excellent.
Sleepy Hollow is Burton's best effort yet and is a
damn entertaining way to spend a night quivering in front
of the box.
