Smallville: The Complete Second Season

Review by Clint Morris

Okay, it’s only a song, but the ‘Somebody save Me’ catch-cry was obviously heard by someone – because one of the WB’s most inventive teen-dramas was hurriedly renewed for a second season.

Unfortunately, that verse didn’t get to Australia; because it’s been taken of Aussie programming schedules indefinitely.

Smallville: The Complete Second Season

An awe-inspiring mixture of action, adventure, thrills, romance and teen drama, “Smallville” – for those that haven’t seen it – tells the story of young Clark Kent (Tom Welling), in his days before trying on the red and Blue tights.

This is long before he met Lois, years before he got the job at The Daily Planet and having Richard Pryor play computer tricks with a bank isn’t even a meagre contemplation at this point.

In Season 2 of the effervescent series, Clark and unremitting love interest Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) have just survived the terrible tornado that rocked their small Kansas town. He’s still ogling over her, but he’s got bigger fish to fry – for example the ‘villain of the week’ – and some discoveries to make about his background and why all of a sudden he’s inherited heat vision.

On par with the first season – though understandably, not as fresh – “Smallville : Season 2” is still a lot of fun. It might get a bit cyclic if you watch it all in one sitting, but an episode now and there, and it plays all the more deliciously.

Transfer-wise, this one looks great. Not only is the Dolby 2.0 surprisingly okay, but it’s in Widescreen, which does it all the more justice. Should pretty much ‘Fly’ off the shelves.

DVD Extras

We get about the same here as the first season. There are two episodes with commentaries (“Red” and “Rosetta”), and both are quite insightful. There’s also a few featurettes (one on guest-star Christopher Reeve, sfx et al), a feature called ‘The Chloe Chronicles’ in which Allison Mack’s character takes us through a video investigation of all the bizarre things that have happened in their town, a deleted scene, blooper reel and some DVD-ROM content.

Conclusion: Movie 75% Extras 70%
