Smallville: Season 3

Review by Clint Morris

The lead character mightn’t have discovered his cape yet, but 'Smallville: Season 3' most certainly flies.

If the previous seasons of the Superman prequel series were a warm-up, then Season 3 is the race. Characters change, new faces enter, plots get beefy, loves are lost and found and, most of all, villains abound.

When we last left Kansas-teenager / Future Man-of-steel Clark Kent (Tom Welling), he had discovered ‘evil’ red kryptonite.

Smallville: Season 3

What that does is transform him from the goodie two-shoes Lana-loving lad into a fiery party-boy without a care in the world.

The only person who can bring Clark back – excuse the pun – ‘down to earth’ is his eternally accommodating pop Jonathan (John Schneider), but this time, old man Kent needs a helping hand.

Clark’s biological father, Jor-El (voiced by Terence Stamp), makes a sneaky trade with Kent in exchange for some temporary super powers (you’ll discover what Kent bartered with later on). With his new strength, Jonathan heads to Metropolis to bring home his hellraising son.

Meantime, we get to see how Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) gets out of that plane that’s pilotless, and whether or not it ultimately aids in his impending hospitalisation.

Other surprises in store for Season 3 include a surprise visit from future Daily Planet editor Perry White (guest star Michael McKean), a strange new boyfriend for Lana Lang, a new power for Kal-El, and we say goodbye to Clark’s best bud, Pete Ross.

Whilst most teenage series seem to lose a bit of gas with each season, the Warner Bros 'Smallville' only seems to get better with age. Here’s hoping it soars for a few years yet: another worthwhile addition to the DVD library.

DVD Extras

Extras in the Box Set include both informative and amusing commentaries from cast and crew (Rosenbaum’s track is a highlight), a blooper reel (always a treat with the 'Smallville' sets), an easter egg featuring Rosenbaum playing interviewer, some more ‘Chloe Chronicles’, an interactive comic book, a featurette on the gang behind the scenes and a selection of deleted scenes.

Conclusion: Movie 75% Extras: 70%
