In 1912 the pride of the White Star Line leaves the port of Southampton on her maiden voyage, to New York.

RMS Titanic is claimed to be unsinkable. Her new hull design incorporates self-contained cells that are intended to keep the ship afloat, even when flooded.

Captain Edward John Smith (Harry Andrews), the company's most senior master, is in command.

SOS Titanic

Chairman of the Board, Joseph Bruce Ismay (Ian Holme) and Chief Designer Henry Harris (Ed Bishop) complete the official party.

Leading figures of society including millionaire John Jacob Astor (David Janssen) occupy luxurious suites while down below in steerage penniless Irish immigrants are confined to overcrowded dormitories.

The Captain and Chairman are determined to break the record for crossing the Atlantic despite frequent ice warnings.

Titanic hits an iceberg with a glancing blow that slices through a large part of the hull. Used for the first time in history, a 'Morse Code' signal is sent from the stricken vessel, SOS (Save Our Souls).

SOS Titanic is billed as a docudrama.

It is unsatisfying in both departments. It isn't detailed enough to be a good documentary, or giving enough time for character development as in a good drama.

It should be a first rate production, the entire cast is excellent.

Familiar faces include Cloris Leachman ('Unsinkable' Molly Brown), David Warner (Laurence Beasley), Susan Saint James (Leigh Goodwin) and Helen Mirren (Stewardess Mary Sloan).

Camerawork and special effects are very good considering its age and a 'Made for Television' budget.

Negatives aside it is an exciting film and worthwhile as a diversion from the Soaps.

Conclusion: Movie 80% Extras 0%
