South Park : Imaginationland

Review by Sean Lynch

Back in the last centuary, a TV show first hit the screens that was so outlandish - the public outcry was phenominal. All because a an eight year old boy had an alien satelitte protrude through his rear.

Little did those on their complaining high horse know that less than a decade later, their standards of crude would be thrown totally out of the window when the same shows creators decided that humour had now evolved to a point where there phrase:

"Let's get someone with Aids to pee in her eye socket, that way she will die slow"

would be uttered by some cute and cuddly forest creatures.

South Park : Imaginationland

Welcome to Imaginationland - or more to the point - Trey Parker and Matt Stone's imagination.

With Futurama making a comeback via the DVD-Movie, it only seems sensible that in lew of a second big screen adventure from the South Park boys that the creators churn out a DVD that is just as epic.

Included on the Imaginationland disc is the monster three-episode story arc (which aired on TV as part of the eleventh season), completley uncut and uncensored - and without all of those pesky commercial breaks!

The epic story follows Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Butters who travel to Imaginationland after Cartman discovers a Leprechaun. Soon they realise all is not well in Imaginationland (a place filled with every character ever conjured up by anyones imagination) with the imminent threat of a terrorist attack likely to destroy everything and everyone - unleashing all the evil imagined characters (Alien, Freddy Kruger, etc).

If Season Ten of South Park took their level of genius satire to an all time high - then Imaginationland is bursting through the stratosphere. It's always been a skill of Trey Parker (and to a lesser extent Matt Stone, who is the Ben Affleck to Parker's Matt Damon) to take serious and important issues and make them as hilariously simplistic and childish as possible - and they've certainly succeeded here.

There are some truly classic moments spread throughout this episode, which really does give South Park : Bigger, Longer & Uncut a run for it's money in the feature length stakes, but at the end of the day - it all comes down to the simple fact that Stone & Parker have unravelled the narrative in a way that the only thing that really matters (politics, religion and violence aside) is that Cartman wants to see Kyle suck his balls.

And at the end of the day - isn't ball sucking to win a bet what comedy is all about?

EXTRAS

The big drawcard of this release is the 40 strong minutes of Audio Commentary by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The duo are quite famous for their lack of love for the Commentary (the last DVD release, they barely did more than three minutes per episode). Unlike most feature commentaries, Parker & Stone are funny and informative, giving great amount of depth and humour to proceedings.

Also included are the extra episodes Man Bear Pig (which also appears on the Series 10 DVD) and the hilariously wrong Christmas Special starring the forest friends. Not to give to much away - but it does involve a blood orgy.

For real fans, there are some interesting Storyboard comparisons of certain scenes - but they hardly compare the the laughs on offer elsewhere on the disc.

A great package, essential for any South Park fan. If this is as close we ever get to another South Park movie, we should all be more than satisfied.

Pure genius!

Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras: 85%
