Space Ghost - Coast to Coast:
Season 2

Review by Sean Lynch

There is an old saying: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The same has to be said for comedy, because it really is a personal choice. And a choice that really has no right or wrong answer. Just because The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps can make $150 Million at the box office, it doesn't mean it's funny.

The same goes with The Office, just because it's considered a "cult show" - that doesn't necessarily mean it's funny to everyone either.

So, keeping that in mind, Space Ghost is (potentially) is pretty funny...

Adult Swim

Cartoon Network has allowed the [adult swim] section of it's channel take whatever direction it damn well pleases, and it's been a pretty innovative decision (especially in the cut throat world of ratings). The sheer balls to make a "Cult" show from the very outset is a stroke of genius. Who needs a number one show when you've got millions of nerds willing to fork out $30 a pop to watch it all on DVD a few years after it's production.

This second series is a vast improvement on the first, with the characters and relationships well and truly honed here. The comedy is tighter, the jokes stronger and the absurdity factor kicked up two or three extra notches.

As with the previous season, every awkward Space Ghost moment is caught on camera. Each of the real celebrities being interviewed can barely contain their puzzlement (or often hangovers as the case seems to often be). This is year two (1995 to be exact) of Space Ghost Coast To Coast's ten year run - so the interviewees often dictate how dated the show looks at various times (does anyone else still remember when Fran Dresher was actually liked... or on TV for that matter?). However, the Jim Carrey appearance still holds up - and serves as a reminder of how popular and funny the guy used to be (pre-Dick & Jane).

Coast To Coast works, primarily, because of the interactions between the B-Characters (Brak, Zorak and Moltar) who contribute most of the best lines and moments on offer. Although, I must say, the jury is still out on whether or not Brack deserved his own spin-off.

But then again - comedy is in the... eye... of the beholder.

EXTRAS

There's some cool extras included here (as always seems to be case with any of the [adult swim] releases) including a bunch of oddly humerous Commentaries, the original Andy Merrill Pilot (it's amazing to see the changes) as well as a few other little tidbits.

The highlight, for mine, is the raw footage of the interview with The Simpsons creator Matt Groening - if only to get a grasp on the fact that you don't have to be attractive to be successful in Hollywood.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras: 65%
