A corrupt judge makes a court order to place the mine under
his jurisdiction forcing Glennister to leave it defenceless.
While he is absent his store of gold is stolen and moved into
town on the orders of the gold commissioner.
Glennister is caught when he tries to recover his property
and thrown into jail. With a few loyal friends and the judge's
daughter he has to take on the power of the crooked officials
and keep his fiancee.
Can the hero keep the two girls sweet, defeat the baddies
and remain squeaky clean?
The Spoilers has a big problem; viewed today, over 60 years
after it was made, one isn't sure if it's an action or a comedy
western.
The characters are typecast: John Wayne, the craggy hero
with … that walk! Marlene Dietrich, portraying aloof sexuality.
Randolph Scott, the smooth villain. Margaret Lindsay, the
judge's daughter, torn between filial duty and her love for…guess
who?
For it's age the stunt work and special effects stand up
well. Highlight of the movie is a vigorous and over the top
saloon fight that starts in Marlene's bedroom, on to the landing,
down the stairs… the bar is demolished, the patrons fight
amongst themselves, Wayne and Scott crash through a window
taking the entire frame with them and continue the fight on
the dusty street.
Who wins? Who was in the right all along? Who gets the girl?
- Do you need a clue? All the negatives aside it's an enjoyable
film.
Restoration of picture and soundtrack is very good.
Conclusion: 80% Extras: 25%.
