Star Trek Generations: Special Edition

Review by Clint Morris

What a moment it was. The hairs stood up on the back of every sci-fi fans neck when Captains Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Kirk (William Shatner) share the same cinematic space.

For the first time. For the last time.

What a novel idea it was to have Kirk – and a couple of the other original ‘Enterprise’ crewies – appear in the film that would reassign TV’s “Next Generation” to the big screen.

Star Trek Generations: Special Edition

After all, there was a built-in audience there (they’d spent a good hundred bucks on six previous “Trek” efforts at the hardtop so this was a well-merited thanks) to start lovin’ those new skivvy-wearing space travellers.

Okay, so the story wasn’t much, but just having old and new come together made the movie. Didn’t hurt having veteran loon Malcolm McDowell play the rogue either. And have you ever actually heard any criticism about the film’s ending? Nope.

Sacrificial contentment for T.J loathers indeed.

DVD Extras

The customary bunch of extra features we’ve seen on each and every one of the previously released Star Trek: Special Edition DVD’s make their triumphant return on the anticipated “Generations” disc.

There’s the elongated documentary about the two Captain’s coming together, a tribute to Matt Jefferies, who designed the original Enterprise starship, special effects featurettes, a few deleted scenes (and an alternate ending – T.J still gets what’s coming to him, don’t fret), a gallery, and several minutes more stuff.

If you’ve only got the bare-bones “Generations” disc on your DVD Tower, it’s time to upgrade.

Conclusion: Movie 70% Extras 80%
