Heck, you can watch it whilst youre shaving that god-awful
prison-beard off!
'Star Trek: The Movies' is all ten Star Trek films in their
recently re-issued "Special Edition" forms. In other
words, if you've been buying all those SE discs separately
- you're about to turn a shade of cerise. If not, you'll discover
one of the best bargain box sets of the year.
As anyone who reads this outlet knows, Im anything
but a Trekkie, yet, and like a lot of other folks, plonk me
in front of a pixelated busty Vulcan or give me a captivating
good vs. evil storyline, and I'll gladly sign up to be a transitory
member at the club.
Most of the 'Trek' films have chalked up near rave reviews
for me - except perhaps that rather so-so first movie, the
dodgy Star Trek 5 (Kirk vs. God - oh joy) and the last
couple of efforts. But the good ones are the corny but oh-so-endlessly-watchable
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the perfectly-penned
Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan or the love letter
to fans that was Star Trek: Generations, where captains
new and old teamed up. As a sequential series, it rocks.
Though it ends on a bit of a sour note with the average Star
Trek: Nemesis, the set proves that this is one of the
most victorious and well-handled franchises of all time.
DVD Extras
Each film comes with a second disc complete with extras -
including deleted scenes, storyboards, vintage promo material,
trailers, and numerous featurettes. My personal favourite
choice of each disc is the newly recorded retrospective documentaries
that chronicle the making, pre and post-effects of each film.
Theyre as gripping as a sweaty exercise bike seat.
If you don't own the recently-released special edition versions
of the 'Star Trek' films already, or, you're just filthy rich
and want to have everything - then 'Star Trek: the Movies'
has your name written all over it (just below Gene Roddenberry's).
Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras: 75%
