Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strike Back

Although victorious over Imperial forces in the first of the Star Wars movies, the troops of the Rebel Alliance find themselves facing the fury of Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers.

The nasty fellow has tracked the rebels to Yavin, in the Hoth system, an ice planet upon which little lives - and Vader is determined to see that even less does.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strike Back

One of the rebel commanders on Yavin is Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and he finds himself attacked by a feral Yeti-type thing and badly injured. Rescued by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) Luke is ordered by Obi-wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) to train to be a Jedi with the master Yoda.

Before he can do this, however, the Imperial forces attack and despite an epic and exciting battle involving giant AT-AT walkers (dinosaur-like mechanical gun platforms) the rebels are forced to flee.

Pursued by Vader and his henchmen, Han and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) escape to the planet Bespin, where a city in the sky run by his old comrade Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams).

In the meantime Luke has landed in a pretty nasty swamp and is befriended by a little green creature we all know to be Yoda. One of the funny things in watching this episode is that even without the surprise of knowing Yoda is the master (having been introduced in the later Star Wars movies) it still works for kids watching it for the first time.

Luke isn't a good student and Yoda fears for the good side of the Force. When he is called to the sky city by a feeling that his friends are in trouble, Luke rejects Yoda's plea to stay and walks into a waiting trap.

What comes next is some of the best of the whole series as our young hero fights the master of darkness.

We all know what happens but we won't say anyway.

The disc contains a full-length feature commentary featuring George Lucas, Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt, Irvin Kershner and Dennis Muren. It's not as good as the first.

The Empire Strikes Back looks terrific and the sound is excellent.

Conclusion: Movie 90% Extras 95%
