If you're quick enough you can get the mouse before the
cat tortures it further and whisk it outside - to relative
safety. Sometimes, however, you're not and the crunching is
a little hard to take.
Anyway, mice out my way are cute, but not as cute as the
lead character in the excellent family movie Stuart Little.
Stuart is an orphan mouse who is chosen by Mr and Mrs Little
(Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie) to be a little brother for their
son, George.
Unfortunately, George is not impressed (how can a mouse throw
a ball) and neither is the house cat Snowbell (brilliantly
voiced by Nathan Lane of Timon from Lion King fame).
Stuart does his best to charm them and does so with his "older
brother", but finds the cat a different story. He gets
eaten (but not swallowed), almost drowns in a washing machine
and then is exiled into adventure through a devious plan made
up by the furry Machiavelli. One of the great lines of the
movie is when Snowbell walks away from Stuart's offered friendship
with a New York-like: "Talk ... to the butt!"
The animation in Stuart Little is gobsmacking and
the computer wizardry has the little fellow looking as natural
as a mouse in a red jumper and slacks can be. The facial features
work beautifully and register every emotion the director was
looking for.
A tight script and wonderful voice work - particularly from
Fox and Lane - make this a movie that adults and children
can really enjoy.
This is perfect family viewing in a perfect transfer to DVD.
Everything about Stuart Little is spot-on.
A must-have adventure for anyone with children.
Conclusion: Movie 90%, Extras 85%
