The Swan Princess

Review by James Anthony

As with most things involving princesses, this animated story is a fairytale featuring a beautiful young woman, a handsome young prince, an evil wizard, magic aplenty, adventure, fighting, derring-do and a frog.

Yes, a frog ... but more about that later.

It is the tale of two young royals whose parents want them to marry when they are of age so the neighbouring kingdoms can unite.

Trouble is that from when they are toddlers, Princess Odette and Prince Derek cannot stand each other.

As so often happens in real life, the pair fall in love as teens and are about to get hitched when Prince Derek plops his size 21 foot into his size 21 mouth and loses the beautiful princess.

Leaving in a huff, she is ambushed by the banned wizard Rothbart, is kidnapped and is taken to a hideaway where she is cursed with a spell that turns her into a swan when moonlight hits a nearby lake.

While imprisoned, she befriends a pond full of animals - including a French-accented frog who demands to be kissed all the time so he can reappear as a prince - and waits for rescue.

Cue Derek and a climactic battle between good and evil.

Youngsters will really enjoy The Swan Princess for its colourful animation, amusing and different characters, as well as the added bonus of having a score filled with some very good songs.

It is an hour-and-a-half of fun that will have adults (sitting with the nippers) having a good chuckle too.

Conclusion: Movie: 80% DVD Extras: 30%
