Despite his attempts to evade military service Dick is drafted
into the army.
During his absence Patsy starts doing gigs again and gets
a manager Randy Hughes (David Clennon) who sets her on the
path to stardom.
Jealous of her growing fame and independence Charlie turns
to whiskey, women and wife beating. In the face of her husband's
physical and mental cruelty Patsy Cline still succeeds in
becoming a legend of country music.
Sweet Dreams is also the title of one of Patsy Cline's big
hits along with 'Crazy' and 'I Fall To Pieces'.
It's the dynamic performance by Jessica Lange that turns
this fairly ordinary story of a singer with marital problems
into a very good movie. Of course a large amount of its success
is through the score that features re-mastered hits from late
fifties to early sixties.
Ed Harris brilliantly portrays the screwed up Dick (no wonder
Patsy didn't change her name)as he engenders great dislike.
As Patsy's mother, Ann Wedgeworth portrays a warm and feisty
Southern woman who holds her mercurial daughter together.
Jessica Lange lip-syncs to Patsy's voice as though it's her
own. The transition from speech to music is flawless. The
character she portrays is driven by the personality coming
through the recordings and the two Patsy Clines are outstanding.
