Talos the Mummy

Horror movies can be a bit of a hit or miss event, with the good ones usually very good and the bad ones - terrible.

Very few movies featuring the bandaged ones from Egypt - mummies - have been much chop (the exception being the most excellent The Mummy).

However, Talos the Mummy is an interesting film that mingles an okay yarn with a bit of horror and a nicely presented amount of tension.

Archaeologist Louise Lombard is excavating at the site where her grandfather died after his digging team opened the ancient tomb of a particularly nasty type called Talos.

Like her grandfather, she opens the tomb and not only discovers that Talos may not acutally be dead, but she loses her boyfriend in the process. That's not all, the opening of the crypt has released a powerful evil that soon forces the expedition to pack its bags and return to London.

Coincidentally, an Egyptian display is on at a London museum and - you guessed it - it just so happens to be Talos. Suddenly people start being murdered and bits of bodies are going missing. Could the Egyptian tyrant be rebuilding himself?

Anyway, just when the survivors thought they were safe, one of their number - brilliantly played by Sean Pertwee - tries to warn of Talos' bid to return from the dead but, no one believes him.

In fact, ace detective Jason Scott Lee reckons he is actually the killer and ignores the ever more obvious signs that something is seriously amiss.

The cast is a good, solid outfit that includes Shelly Duvall, Honor Blackman, Michael Lerner and Lysette Anthony.

The transfer looks good and while the special effects were nothing too special, they were more than acceptable.

Talos the Mummy is an above average B-grade horror and the ending has a nice twist that is kept very well under wraps. (Sorry, couldn't help it).

Conclusion: Movie 75%, Extras 20%
