Three viewings and a whole heck of a lot of pizza later,
this chap was still impressed by Arnie, James Cameron and
the team that created one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.
For anyone who has lived in a movie-free zone for the past
20 years, The Terminator is about a cyborg executioner
being sent back in time (from 2029 to the 1980s) to kill the
future mother of the man who would save humanity from extinction
at the hands of supercomputers and robots.
The opening sets the scene as robot airgunships hunt down
humans in spotlights and giant tanks crush piles of human
skulls under their tracks.
Opposing the terminator is war hero, Kyle Reece (Michael
Biehn) who would lay down his life to protect the future saviour
of the world and risks journeying into the past to stop the
Cyberdyne 101 cyborg from terminating Sarah Connor (Linda
Hamilton).
The relentless nature of the terminator makes for an exciting
movie and this, mixed with a really well thought out plot
and some terrific action scenes, resulted in this becoming
a classic. So, of course, did the phrase: "I'll be back."
You can say what you like about James "I'm the king
of the world" Cameron, but he makes some damn fine movies.
The transfer on to DVD is as near to perfect as you can get
with excellent detail and great colour marred, only slightly,
by film artefacting.
And watch for a young Bill Paxton as a blue-spiked hair punk
who mouths off to Arnie and watches as his fellow hoon has
his heart ripped out. Game over, man!
Conclusion: Movie 90%, Extras 85%
