The Killer Elite

Mike Locken (James Caan) and George Hansen (Robert Duvall) work for ComTech, a "cleaning" agency contracted to the CIA.

One day, when they are acting as minders to a defector, George shoots the man then guns down his partner.

Mike is critically injured but manages to survive although permanently crippled.

The Killer Elite

By intensive physical exercise and martial arts training he overcomes his disabilities and is re-employed by ComTech executives Laurence Weyburn (Gig Young) and Cap Collis (Arthur Hill).

Mike is assigned to protect a Chinese diplomat who is in danger of being assassinated by his former buddy, now enemy, George.

The Killer Elite isn't a very good picture.

A lot more is expected from director Sam Peckinpah than this overblown and under-acted offering.

There are touches of his brilliance particularly in the opening credits and slow-mo violence, but for most of the film there is little evidence of his handiwork.

The plot is confused and thin. The Chinese seem to have been dragged into the story to get some martial arts action scenes going; and they are disjointed and unconvincing.

Gig Young and Arthur Hill are particularly good as the double-dealing company heads.

Robert Duvall is adequate as a stock villain.

James Caan though, wears the same inane cap-toothed smile whether he's in an orgy, being shot or facing some of the toughest characters in the business.

A disappointing film.

Conclusion: Movie 65% Extras 20%
